1. Mattel WWE Ringside Collectibles Exclusive – Masked Kane
Riding the wave of the 2.21.11 promotional videos for the Undertaker’s return, wrestling action figure collectors were treated (or in some cases, tortured) with an air of puzzlement surrounding the release of the first Mattel WWE Ringside Collectibles Exclusive. It was revealed to be Kane with a classic, masked look from 2002 to 2003, fully realizing Kane’s transformation from masked machine to unmasked monster. With a removable mask, shackles and a towel, the figure would become the definitive look and version of Kane, complete with foreboding flames licking the sides of the packaging. Not only did the classic aspect of the figure speak to collectors but modern day fans enjoyed the option of playing with the bald Kane they had become accustomed to and – now, more than ever – a masked version of The Big Red Monster.
A long, productive year for Mattel and WWE alike saw many, many wrestling action figures be released and gave detailed looks into where the line was headed. Controversial at times but always out to please both fans and collectors alike, the Mattel WWE action figure line enjoyed great success in 2011 and should easily continue the same success in 2012.
